Visible Voices Meeting

Please join us as LaTosha Traylor explores the ways in which motherhood and mothering are organized or structured for Black women who have a history of incarceration.  Tosha is a PhD student at UIC.  She was an intern for Visible Voices in 2006.  She says, "Grace House and the ladies of Visible Voices hold a special place in my heart, so I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas."  Plus, Tosha is bringing dinner!

  • More than 16,000 women go to jail annually in Cook County Jail and about 82% are mothers.
  • About 80% of women detained at Cook County Jail are charged with non-violent crimes and only 1.8% of the 3,100 women admitted to Illinois prisons in 2009 were classified as a high security risk.
